ASRM Guidelines: What Surrogates Need to Know

If you are considering a surrogacy journey, we first and foremost want to thank you for your generosity in wanting to help intended parents achieve their dream of having a family. Our team could not do what we do without our amazing surrogates.

As an agency, we follow the American Society of Reproductive Medicine’s (ASRM) guidelines when determining whether to accept a potential surrogate into our program. The ASRM is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the advancement of the science and practice of reproductive medicine. Experts in the assisted reproduction field have established these standards to provide the best opportunity for a successful surrogacy journey and to protect the health of both the surrogate and the baby she will carry.

What are the ASRM guidelines?

  • Must be between the ages of 21 and 40
  • Have a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI), as determined by the physician or clinic
  • Have successfully carried at least one pregnancy to term without any major complications
  • No more than three cesarean deliveries
  • Must be raising a child of your own in your home
  • Must be a non-smoker
  • No illicit drug or alcohol abuse
  • No tattoos or piercings in the past 12 months
  • Must pass a psychological evaluation.
  • Be off anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications for at least 12 months

Are there any other qualifiers to become a surrogate?
Beyond these criteria, there are some things that can disqualify a potential surrogate from being approved, such as unstable home life, financial instability, unresolved or untreated trauma, a history of major depression, bipolar disorder, or another psychological disorder, and a lack of an adequate support system.

What if I match independently?
Any reputable and ethical surrogacy agency will require gestational carriers to meet the ASRM guidelines. If a potential surrogate does not meet the guidelines and chooses to match independently, the intended parent’s fertility clinic will still enforce the guidelines and require medical and psychological screening.

I meet the ASRM guidelines. Where can I find information?
