As with any pregnancy, it is important for surrogates to focus on their health during their pregnancy. Choosing to stay fit and make healthy choices provides the optimal environment for both the surrogate and baby to thrive. One should make a point to discuss with their OB about what exercise is appropriate during pregnancy. We have put together some tips to help you with ideas to stay fit and healthy during your surrogate journey. We have a new Facebook group to help with fun ideas surrounding fitness, nutrition, and motivation and we would love for you to join Fit For The Solution.
Here are some tips to stay fit and moving during your journey:
- One: Swim
Swimming is a great workout. It is gentle, has no impact on joints, and doesn’t put a strain on your body. It is a weightless exercise. Most community pools offer water aerobics classes designed specifically for pregnant women.
- Two: Walk
You can easily get your heart rate up by brisk walking. This is another great exercise as doesn’t require high-impact or jerky movements. Walking is also a social activity that can allow time for you to connect with a partner, friend, or family member.
- Three: Low-Impact Aerobics
Another great option is a low-impact aerobic class taught by a certified aerobics instructor. Many gyms, community groups, and even hospitals have classes designed specifically for pregnant women. Yoga classes for pregnant women should be safe as well.
- Four: Follow a Solid Dietary Plan
This one is super important. You will want to consult with your doctor on a healthy dietary plan for each stage of your pregnancy. If you have access to a nutritionist, they can really help design meals that are both healthy and nutritious.
- Five: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Water intake is vital for preventing early labor. Water is especially important if you’re following a regular exercise routine. Water can also help with nausea and actually helps prevent overeating as well. Do you know how much water you should be drinking a day? Here is a water calculator that will help keep you on track and to stay hydrated.
- Six: Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleep is very important for feeling mentally and physically well. The later months of pregnancy can be extra challenging as it becomes increasingly difficult to get comfortable. Prioritizing sleep throughout your pregnancy is what will help your body recover and recuperate. Blackout curtains can be helpful to create a dark space for optimal rest.
- Seven: Listen to Your Body
You will want to listen to what your body is telling you. If you feeling tired, rest. If an activity feels too strenuous, stop. If you have any questions about an exercise activity or food choice, consult with your doctor.
