Tips for a Healthy Surrogate Pregnancy in 2023

Happy New Year to our surrogate community! We are so grateful for you and your role in helping to create happy families. As a gestational carrier, the main goal is to deliver a healthy baby and hand her over to her parents, who have been anxiously awaiting her arrival. It is truly a magical moment to witness the intended parents meet their baby for the first time. If you are planning a surrogacy journey in 2023, we want to share the following tips to help you have a healthy pregnancy and a positive experience.

Eat a well-balanced diet
A diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and protein and consists of primarily whole, unprocessed foods is particularly important during pregnancy to ensure that your body is getting the extra nutrients it needs to support the baby. We recommend checking with your doctor to discuss specific dietary needs during pregnancy.

Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is important during pregnancy to form amniotic fluid and promote overall health and well-being. Consider using an app to track your water intake.

Exercise
Staying active throughout your pregnancy reduces the risk for certain conditions, like gestational diabetes, and can help you have an easier time during labor and delivery. The level and intensity of exercise you can do will likely depend on how active you were prior to becoming pregnant. It’s important to consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise routine, particularly during pregnancy.

Take a prenatal vitamin
It is recommended to begin taking a prenatal vitamin prior to the embryo transfer. Look for one that includes folic acid, iron, and calcium, and consult with your doctor about any additional supplements that may be beneficial during pregnancy.

Pamper yourself
Get plenty of rest (it’s okay to take that nap!), treat yourself to a prenatal massage, ask for help when you need it – in general, take it easy, and be extra kind to yourself. You are doing an incredible act of service and deserve to be pampered.

Nurture your relationship with the intended parents
Communicating regularly with the IPs can help them feel connected to the pregnancy as well as strengthen your bond with them. Many surrogates and IPs build close friendships during the pregnancy and continue to stay in touch long after the journey is over.

Document your journey
Helping to create a family is an amazing experience you’ll want to revisit. Document your journey through photos, videos, and journaling so that years from now you can look back on the experience.

Connect with other surrogates
We have an amazing community at Surrogate Solutions! You can connect with other surrogates through our private Facebook group to share experiences, seek advice, and receive encouragement. (Note that you will need to request access and answer a few questions before being added to the group). You can also reach out to our team at any time for support. Most of our team members have been surrogates themselves. We are here to guide, support, and advocate for you!
