When same-sex couples turn to egg donation and surrogacy to build their families, sometimes its other members of the LGBTQ+ community who are there to support them. That’s the case for Jordan, who chose to become an egg donor knowing that she will need help to have her own family one day.
Growing up, Jordan learned about the hardships LGBTQ+ individuals and couples can face in building their families through her mom’s work as an IVF coordinator at a fertility clinic in Oklahoma City. “I got to know many of my mom’s patients over the years and a lot of them were gay couples,” she says. “We were close with some of the patients and would get invited to family dinners at their homes and other events. In hearing their stories, I would often think about what it must feel like to need the help of another person to have the family you want more than anything.”
Jordan met her wife, Kelsi, in April 2019. That same year, she applied to become an egg donor with Egg Donor & Surrogate Solutions. She did a cycle for two intended fathers, who are now the proud parents of a baby girl.
“I was open to donating to any intended parents, but I’m glad it worked out the way it did,” Jordan says. “It’s special to help these couples create their families because there are people in our community who are not able to live their lives openly, let alone have children. I feel very strongly about being an advocate for them.”
