When Hannah first considered becoming an egg donor, she was looking for a way to help pay for college. What she did not expect was how much the experience would change her life.
Over the course of three donations, Hannah helped a family grow, graduated without student debt, discovered a passion for health and fitness, and gained a deeper understanding of what family building can mean.
From Curiosity to Egg Donor
Hannah first saw egg donation advertisements on social media. She had heard people joke about donating eggs, but she had never seriously considered it until she decided to return to school.
She had plenty of questions. Would donating affect her future fertility? What would the process be like? Would she feel emotionally connected to a child who shared her DNA?
Ultimately, she and her husband decided to explore the opportunity.
Her husband was incredibly supportive throughout the process, and her family and friends were supportive too, although her mom naturally had questions about the medical side and future fertility.
Why She Preferred Private Egg Donation
Hannah’s first donation was through an egg bank. While the medical procedure went well, the experience involved significant travel and expenses.
When she decided to donate again, she chose private egg donation through an agency.
The difference was significant.
Hannah appreciated being treated personally, having communication throughout the process, receiving travel support, and knowing that her donation was going directly to a family.
“I wanted to feel a little bit more like a person rather than a number,” she shared.
For Hannah, knowing that a family had chosen her made the experience even more meaningful.
What Surprised Her Most
Hannah says one of the biggest surprises was how much information is required before becoming an egg donor.
The application and screening process includes extensive medical and family history, testing, and evaluations. While it can feel overwhelming, Hannah understands why the process is so thorough.
She also had questions about the medications and injections.
After her first cycle, however, she found that the injections quickly became routine. The retrieval itself was also much easier than she expected.
Her advice is to ask questions about the medications, procedure, recovery, work schedule, exercise, and travel before getting started.
The Unexpected Impact
Egg donation did more than help Hannah pay for college.
When she first applied, she needed to lose some weight to meet the program requirements. That goal motivated her to make major changes in her health and fitness.
She ultimately lost around 30 pounds, fell in love with fitness, and became a certified personal trainer.
What started as a way to help pay for school became a passion that changed the direction of her life.
Helping Create a Family
One of Hannah’s most meaningful moments came when she learned that her donation had resulted in a pregnancy and eventually a live birth.
The intended parents had shared part of their story with her before the donation, so learning they were pregnant felt incredibly special.
“It made me more proud that I got to help somebody bring their child into the world,” Hannah said.
Now, as Hannah prepares to welcome her own daughter, she says her perspective has changed even more.
Experiencing pregnancy herself has given her a deeper understanding of how meaningful it is to help someone who may have spent years hoping to become a parent.
And would she do it again?
Absolutely.
“I would honestly, I would do it again.”
Hannah’s Advice for Future Donors
Hannah’s message to women considering egg donation is simple: It is okay to be nervous. Ask questions, learn about the process, and make sure you have the right support.
She also encourages potential donors to think about the long-term implications, including the possibility that a donor-conceived person may someday want to learn more about their genetic background.
For Hannah, that possibility is something she is comfortable with.
Her experience gave her the opportunity to help create a family while also creating positive changes in her own life.
