A Spouse’s Role in The Journey of Egg Donation and Surrogacy

In a recent interview, we had the privilege of speaking with Blake, who generously shared his experience as a supportive spouse in the world of surrogacy and egg donation. Blake’s wife, Katy, decided to pursue egg donation and later in life, surrogacy to help create happy families – a decision that would change their lives forever.

Blake Encalade is the husband of Katy Encalade, owner of Egg Donor & Surrogate Solutions, as well as a former Egg Donor and Surrogate.  We discussed everything from the importance of being supportive during these unique journeys to how they have impacted both him and his wife. As someone who was not familiar with either surrogacy or egg donation before meeting Katy, Blake had to learn and adapt as a supportive partner. Once he learned more about the process and saw how it affected both families, Blake realized the power and significance of surrogacy and egg donation.

Blake’s journey with Katy started with egg donation, when they were a young married couple with no major concerns. When Katy brought up the idea, Blake was supportive and agreed to it with no hesitation. For him, there was no consideration of his DNA going out into the world, and the decision was primarily about helping others.

After Katy’s experience as an egg donor, she went on to work for the same agency through which she had donated. This job opened her eyes to a whole new world, and Blake learned a lot about the industry through Katy’s experience. When she brought up the idea of being a surrogate, Blake was much more familiar with the process but still had some concerns about what it would mean for their family.

Being a surrogate for someone else was a very different experience. While Katy was no stranger to process and industry, being pregnant with someone else’s child was a much bigger responsibility. As the supportive spouse, Blake had to adapt to this new dynamic, where Katy had to put her health and wellbeing in the hands of others. It was a time where he had to be more hands-on and emotionally present to support her as well as their own three children.

For instance, he would often go with her to appointments and ultrasounds, becoming more involved in the medical aspects of the journey. Blake had to ensure that Katy was taking care of herself physically and emotionally, and their open communication helped them navigate the potential emotional, physical, and mental challenges that come with surrogacy.

While the surrogacy journey was more demanding, it was also deeply rewarding. For Blake, seeing the joy and happiness Katy brought to the family she was helping was priceless. They had formed a close bond intended parents with and being a part of creating a happy family was an incredible experience.

In summary, Blake’s experience of being a supportive spouse for both egg donation and surrogacy journeys has been unique. Supporting Katy through these journeys required him to learn and adapt, and their unwavering love for each other made it all possible. While surrogacy was more demanding, it was also enormously rewarding, bringing joy to two families.
