Having children was something my husband and I knew we wanted before we got married. We intended to try for a year before turning to IVF. Several of our friends and family members had done IVF, so we felt that it was the logical next step. Despite a smooth embryo creation process, multiple transfers failed. As a result of COVID, our third attempt was canceled, and then enlarged fibroids in my uterus forced us to cancel our fourth attempt. The possibility of using a surrogate had been discussed before, and we decided now was the time to explore our options.
One of the things that surprised us during the process was the fact that surrogates and their families often wish to become friends after the baby is born. The truth is, we thought they wouldn’t want to stay in touch for some reason, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! The relationship we developed with our surrogate is absolutely amazing; we stay in touch to this day! We were even able to visit her and her family recently!
The experience is full of unforgettable moments. A really memorable experience was being able to attend ultrasound appointments and see the baby’s growth before she was born! If I could, I would try to make a day of it by going to the appointment and then stopping at a baby store to buy something for the nursery. In addition, I enjoyed the time we spent talking about anything and everything before McKenna was born.
It was like a whirlwind in the days following McKenna’s arrival. There are some things to keep in mind that nothing can prepare you for, like how fast they will grow out of their clothes. Also, remember to let your instincts guide you rather than what you read and enjoy every minute. Among all the wonderful things she does, my favorite is the little noises she makes and the sighs she lets out that melt your heart.
Finally, if I had to offer any advice the best thing I would say is don’t get offended if friends or family use incorrect terminology or ask strange questions. The details and logistics of surrogacy are often unclear to many people. The majority of people aren’t being nosy, they’re simply curious!
