From Donor to Surrogate: How Helping Families Helped Shape Mine

By Katy

When I was in college, I made the decision to become an egg donor. I didn’t know then just how deeply it would shape the rest of my life. I simply knew that a family out there was waiting—and that I could be part of their story. And that was enough.

Not long after, life moved quickly. I got married and became a mom to three amazing kids. Our home was full of joy (and chaos!) but as I journeyed through my late 20s, I couldn’t shake the stories I kept hearing—families still hoping, still struggling, still waiting.

One day, I looked at my husband and said, “What if I was a surrogate for someone?”
He looked at me and smiled, “You want to be pregnant again?”
And I replied simply, “Someone needs to help these families. I can.”

That was it. A seed of purpose planted in my heart, and I knew it was time.

Becoming a surrogate was one of the most meaningful decisions I’ve ever made. We were matched with an amazing family. They were so full of hope and we aligned on the same values.  It changed our family in ways I never expected. Our kids were young at the time—too little to really understand—but I know one day, especially when my daughters are mothers themselves, they’ll look back and see what our family chose to do. Not just the physical sacrifice, but the kindness, the compassion, the decision to show up for someone else in the most life-giving way possible.

It wasn’t always easy. There were hiccups, some bumps in the road—but even in those moments, I never doubted the journey. We made lifelong friends through the process. My kids learned empathy by watching us live it. And I carry the honor of knowing I got to help someone else become a parent.

I’d do it again in a heartbeat—100 times over if I could.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a surrogate—even just a little—maybe that little thought is worth exploring. Talk to someone who’s done it. Ask the questions. Hear the stories.

And just maybe… you’ll realize, like I did, that you can be that someone who helps another family grow.
